The Material Plane

According to most scholars, the cosmos is comprised of more than what most experience. The physical world, that is known and experienced by most of Kaledor's creatures, is known as the material plane. For many the physical plane is all that matters for the entirety of their lives. For others, however, the other planes of existence become an influential part of their lives.

Most scholars believe that the material plane is so varied in matter, thoughts, and energy in comparison to the other planes of existence because it resides at an intersection between all of them. Others believe that the material plane is the source of all the rest, the other planes expanding outward and forming as opposing energies repel each other.

The Elemental Planes

The elemental planes are places of pure materials and energies. Many scholars believe that any physical object that exists in the material plane can be broken down to a combination of elemental materials and energies from the four elemental planes of existence.

The Spiritual Planes

The spiritual planes are comprised of ideas, philosophies, and the souls of things. Unlike the elemental planes, it is believed that the spiritual planes intersect outside the material realm as well as within it. Common conceptions assert that the influence of the spiritual planes on the plane of the material is the root of inspiration and motivation within the minds of free-willed beings. To the religious, spiritual planes are the homes of the gods, and it is believed that when a free-willed being dies, its soul gravitates toward the plane it was most aligned with.

Other Planes

Some planes do not fit into either category of the elemental or spiritual. Scholars theorize that these planes are more like echoes or afterimages of the material plane. As the energies from the material plane spread out into the multi-present cosmos, they reform in often unpredictable arrangements that often reflect the forms of the material plane to some degree. In addition to those listed here are smaller planes of existence that form for unknown reasons, and sometimes disappear with equally little understanding.

Outsiders

Beings from the various planes of existence sometimes find themselves in the material plane. These creatures are commonly referred to as "outsiders", or in some cases "intruders". Their presence in the material plane is almost always brief, as the natural order of things often recalls them to their plane of origin.
